About the Teacher

Alex

Hi! I am a musician, composer, and sound artist with over 10 years of teaching experience with all age groups and many different class styles. I have worked with children my whole life, starting as a student teacher for my own mentor, working my way up as a music instructor for young musicians programs, and even spending time as a nursery assistant. I hold a BFA in Music (Performance) from the University of Lethbridge and an MA in Music and Sonic Media from the University of Sussex. Over my career I have been very fortunate to collaborate with singers, pianists, orchestras, and recording artists.

My hope is that you can enjoy learning music as much as I enjoy playing and singing it. My specialties are teaching singing and piano to beginner students and I excel at coaching young students with focus and motivation. I have also worked with exam coaching and high level piano training for university auditions as well as tutoring. One of my great personal interests is composition, and I like to have all of my students experiment with creating their own sounds. Much of my teaching includes mirroring or repeating phrases as well as having students watch what is happening with their hands/voice. (Sometimes this takes the use of technology.) I find this way of learning is just as important as reading sheet music and they work well together.
