Hello, I’m Alex Barbieri

After studying in Brighton and returning to the UK to be closer to family, I was instantly drawn to the welcoming and creative spirit of our local community.

My motive is to give young people the skills they need to be tomorrow’s musicians.

I believe that everyone can play music, and my goal is always to help them find their love for the arts.

Why do I teach? Put very simply, because I love it. Helping others to discover the joy of music gives me a sense of purpose and fulfilment.

Why Hove Music?

Experience

I have taught music in Canada for years, including programs like Music for Young Children, the Royal Conservatory, and private lessons for all ages. Locally, I’ve also worked as an early years teaching assistant, bringing a strong foundation in child development to my teaching.

Passion

I truly believe that everyone can play music, and I love helping students discover their own artistic voice.

Holistic Approach

Music is more than just notes; it’s a powerful, expressive language that can heal, build confidence, and enhance learning in all areas of life.  I strive to teach with musician health and wellbeing at the forefront.

Commitment to Teaching Excellence

I hold myself to a high standard, studying pedagogy and growing my own practice so that I can better serve my students. I hold degrees in piano performance and sonic media as part of my commitment to growing my own skills and continue to keep learning every day.

Helping Musicians Love Music.

Our teaching method allows students to play what they want to play. We use method books, theory, popular and movie/musical theatre music to learn fundamentals in a variety of styles. It encourages achievement in music by allowing learners to reach their goals by teaching practical skills with fun material. The philosophy is that learning how to practice at home will mean more time spent enjoying learning.

More Learning. More Music. More fun.

The hard part about learning how to perform music is learning how to control our movements. Our teachers are dedicated to learning pedagogy. They learn the psychology behind how to best train students in a way that protects their mental and physical well-being. We focus on the learning strategies so that you can focus on the fun, and reaching your goals! Because of this dedication to teaching excellence, all of our teachers hold a post secondary degree in the arts.

Bio

Alex

Hi! I am a musician, composer, and sound artist with over 10 years of teaching experience with all age groups and many different class styles. I hold a BFA in Music (Performance) from the University of Lethbridge and an MA in Music and Sonic Media from the University of Sussex. Over my career I have worked with many musicians from singers, choirs, chamber music, classical, jazz and alternative music bands.

My hope is that you can enjoy learning music as much as I enjoy playing and singing it. My specialties are teaching singing and piano to beginner students and I excel at coaching young students with focus and motivation. I have also worked with exam coaching and high level piano training for university auditions as well as tutoring. One of my great personal interests is composition, and I like to have all of my students experiment with creating their own sounds. Much of my teaching includes mirroring or repeating phrases as well as having students watch what is happening with their hands/voice. (Sometimes this takes the use of technology.) I find this way of learning is just as important as reading sheet music and they work well together.
